PARCC TESTING INFORMATION NIGHT – Tonight!
Avoca West – Thursday, February 5th 7:00p.m.
Attention Avoca West Parents! Beginning in March, students in 3rd - 8th grade will take part in the PARCC assessments. PARCC replaces the ISAT assessments that have been traditionally given in March.
 
Mrs. Hutchison will host a PARCC informational meeting at Avoca West on Thursday, February 5 @ 7:00 p.m.
 
SUMMER SCHOOL REGISTRATION OPEN
As in the past, Wilmette is partnering with us to provide a wide range of educational opportunities for our students. Registration forms are available online under the Community and Parents tab.   Please register for Wilmette classes directly. Bus registration for our students, however, is completed by the Pupil Services Department at Avoca District 37 for Avoca Students.  This year we will be once again offering "Basic" reading and math classes for our students identified from criteria established at each building to help support our learners.
 
Registration for classes closes on March 6, 2015.
 
No additional bus stops will be added to the bus routes after the March 6, 2015 registration deadline.  Students registering after this date will be accommodated on existing routes.  If you have any questions regarding registration or transportation for the 2015 Summer School session, please call the Pupil Services Department at (847) 728-4142.

SIX FLAGS – READ TO SUCCEED
Mrs.Geidner will once again be facilitating the Six Flags "Read to Succeed" program for all kindergarten-5th graders at Avoca West, as well as 6th graders at Marie Murphy. Each child who reads (or is read to) for 360 minutes will earn a free ticket to Six Flags! Reading logs and details are included in the attached handouts.
Completed reading logs can be returned to either ITC any time before February 20th, 2015. Please contact Mrs. Geidner with any questions! Happy reading!

SECOND GRADE MUSIC PERFORMANCE – Feb. 12th
Second Grade Performance: The second graders will present their Kodaly-inspired music performance, based on Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, on Thursday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Avoca West South Gym.  Please join us for an evening of song, story, play and a few giggles.
 
AVOCA ITC - COIN WARS & BUBBLE GUM DAY – Feb 5th-6th
Bubble Gum Day and Coin Wars wrap up on Feb. 6th! Throughout the week we have had coin wars to raise money for our therapy dogs from Adventures With Bailey. As a thank you for participating, all students will be allowed to bring gum from home, and chew it at school on Friday, February 6th!

Girls’ Night Out – Friday, Feb. 6th
Girls' Night Out is tomorrow, February 6th from 6-8pm at Avoca West. This year’s theme: BEACH PARTY with DJ games, music and food for girls in grades K-5.  We have some fun surprises in store for all. BOYS NIGHT THANK YOU
Thank you to everyone that attended Boys’ Night. We had a huge turn out this year and we hope that the boys had a great time! Thank you to all that helped put away the tables and chairs and helped with the clean-up. It made the clean-up so much easier with everyone pitching in; it was amazing to see everyone coming together. Thank you, all!
 
A huge thanks goes out to the fabulous volunteers that made this night such a success. Thank you so much for jumping in where you were needed.  Thanks to: Louise Dechovitz , Matt Coatar, Colleen Rosenthal, Jessica LeFebvre, John Wilson, Ann Sulkin, Val Ponczek, Jennifer Petterson, Virginia Chung,  Xiaoyan Chen, Donna Monte-Christo and Jennifer Cadet.
From the set-up to clean-up and everything in between thank you for making boys’ night go so smoothly. Could not have done this without your help!

NEW TRIER WINTER CARNIVAL – Friday, Feb. 20th, 5:30-9p.m.
 
Come one, come all to New Trier High School's Winter Carnival, featuring tons of games, inflatables, sports, crafts, and more -- all perfect for elementary and middle school students. Admission is free, and game tickets and food can be purchased on site. The event takes up every floor of the Winnetka Campus, 385 Winnetka Ave. Proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity.

MARIE MURPHY’S HALLOWEEN DANCE – Friday, Oct. 17th

Marie Murphy's annual Halloween Dance will be held on Friday, October 17th from 7-9 pm. There will be pizza and concessions, as well as dancing, Open Gym, a costume contest and other fun activities.  Come in your Halloween Costume or come as yourself. Hope to see you there!  Admission is $7 at the door, concessions range from $1-$2.  All profits are donated to charity.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Battle of the Books is back for Avoca West 4th and 5th Graders! Registration opens online on October 1st through the Glenview Public library, and runs for about 6 weeks. All information, including booklists, can be found on the AW ITC webpage by clicking on the B.O.B. link. We hope to see lots of Vikings representing Avoca in this wonderful community program! 5TH ANNUAL GREAT PUMPKIN DECORATING CONTEST

The Avoca West ITC 5th Annual Great Pumpkin Decorating Contest is back! For details and a video of last year’s pumpkins, visit the AW ITC webpage! Entries can be brought to the Avoca West library throughout the month of October. Happy decorating!

Monday, October 20 is Preview Day

All of your children will get the opportunity to walk through the book fair and make a "wish list" to bring home to you.

You have several options for purchasing books:

      1. Send cash or a check made out to "Anderson's Bookfair Company" with your child Tuesday-Thursday and they will be allowed to visit the book fair to purchase their books.

      2. Visit the book fair with your child and purchase books (hours are listed below).

      3. Come during your conference time and purchase books.

Avoca Night at Corner Bakery – Wed., Oct. 22

On Wednesday, just in time for conferences, Corner Bakery will be donating 15% of all proceeds from the Avoca community to the Eighth Grade Graduation Committee.  Stop by anytime between 4p.m. and 9p.m., tell them you are with Avoca, and  treat your family to dinner.  Bon appetit! 

 

FALL BOX TOPS – Oct. 23rd

Fall Box Top Collection Deadline is Approaching! Please send all box tops in by October 23rd for them to count for the fall collection.  Make sure to put box tops in a bag or envelope with homeroom teacher’s name on it in order for those to count towards the homeroom total. Homeroom with the most box tops wins a reward.

INTERCULTURAL DINNER & TALENT SHOW–Friday, Nov. 21st

LAST CALL FOR YOUR INPUT:  AW BIRTHDAY TREATS

Worried about the sugar intake in your child's classroom?  Or about the number of disruptions to their learning?  Did you know that some classes have celebrated birthdays as often as 6 times in one month?  The PTC's Health & Wellness Committee has been working on creating a recommendation for birthday treats in classes.  Click here to read about a new proposal for birthday celebrations in class, and then please send your feedback to amyshinohara@gmail.com.  We've gotten lots of feedback already, ranging from, “Don’t change anything,” to “Eliminate all food at birthday celebrations.”  Let us know what you think!

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE CARE

Wed. Oct 22nd and Thurs. Oct. 23rd

The Glenview School Age Program, a program of One Hope United, is happy to announce that we will be providing care during the Parent Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, October 22 and Thursday, October 23.  We will be providing care for children in kindergarten and older.  We will be charging 6 dollars per child for up to a half hour of care.  This payment is required at the time you drop off your child.   Due to lack of interest in this program we will be closing our program at 6:00.  Care will not be provided for conferences occurring after 6:00.

 

If you are not currently enrolled in our programs there will be an emergency form that needs to be filled out before your child enters the program.  The program will be held in the North Gym of Avoca West School.

 

This program is being run along with the half day programs that we are already having.  The half day program runs from 11:15 until 6.  The charge for the half day program will be $33.  If you have teacher conference during that time care will be able to be provided. 

 

We will also be holding a full day program on the Friday the 24th when Avoca and Marie Murphy are closed for the in-service training.  The cost for the full day program is $48. 

 

Payment for the program will be required prior to the program being held.  We accept both checks and credit cards as forms of payment. Unfortunately we are unable to accept cash.  Prior registration for these programs is required.  To register please contact us at 847-998-7477.  You can also email us at jwarren@onehopeunited.org.

 

New Trier High School Referendum &

SCHOOL TOURS – Sat. Oct.25th and Tues. Nov. 4th

New Trier has approved a referendum that will appear on the November 4th ballot. The referendum, if successful, will provide funds for facilities improvements at the school including more than 25 new academic classrooms, 3 new science labs, two new elevators for ADA accessibility, and a new library and cafeteria.  More information is available on the New Trier website at:  http://www.newtrier.k12.il.us/facilitiesresearch/  New Trier will also be offering tours on Saturday, October 25, at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., or noon beginning in the Student Cafeteria on the Winnetka Campus, 385 Winnetka Ave. All Avoca parents are encouraged to attend!
